Evangelos Liolios, President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation
Η ειρωνεία;
Από τα Coffee Island στα…
Σύμφωνα με το κατηγορητήριο, επί μία ολόκληρη δεκαετία (2016–2026) φέρεται να συμμετείχε σε κύκλωμα δωροδοκίας και δωροληψίας για τη χειραγώγηση 49 αγώνων μπάσκετ, από την Α1 μέχρι τα σχολικά πρωταθλήματα. Το πιο «γλυκό» στοιχείο;
Αν αυτό δεν είναι εθνικό σπορ, τότε ποιο είναι;
Τελικά… τι άλλο θα μάθουμε; Ότι ο αλγόριθμος είχε «χέρι»; Ότι τα Coffee Island είναι η νέα «πράσινη» επένδυση του ελληνικού αθλητισμού; Ή ότι το επόμενο «σκευωρία» θα το πει κάποιος άλλος, από το ίδιο κελί, περιμένοντας να δει αν θα του φέρουν freddo;
Vangelis Liolios: The Pediatrician Who Wanted to Protect the Children—and Allegedly Fixed Their Basketball Games
If someone had told you a few years ago that the president of the Greek Basketball Federation would end up in pretrial detention over allegedly rigged games—including school and youth matches—you would probably have laughed.
Today, Vangelis Liolios is not laughing. The former EOK president, who resigned only recently, was ordered held in pretrial custody together with businessman Giorgos Mavraganis, his close associate, after testifying before the 9th regular investigator in the “rigged basketball games” case.
The interrogation marathon lasted about 12 hours. Nothing says “transparency” like a twelve-hour session that ends with a cell.
According to the case file, the two are considered the central figures in the manipulation of 49 basketball games across all categories, from the top division down to the kind of games where the only thing at stake is a parent’s blood pressure. Investigator and prosecutor decided they should remain in temporary detention.
It is the third pretrial detention in the case, after the former referee who testified first on Friday. So the scoreboard now reads: referees 1, former federation president 1, and the reputation of Greek basketball… let’s not talk about the score.
Both defendants reportedly denied the charge of a series of bribery offences over a decade aimed at manipulating results in various competitions.
Liolios, the man who until recently was the institutional head of Greek basketball, reportedly told the judicial officer that he was there because “some people want to remove me from the EOK.” Of course.
It is always comforting to know that when the evidence gets uncomfortable, the explanation is a conspiracy.
He allegedly argued that his involvement concerns a plot by people with whom he has been in dispute for four years,people who, according to him, are scheming “with lies” to push him out of the presidency.
He also reportedly presented his full financial situation to the investigator: the results of four tax audits carried out over the last decade, which, according to him, found nothing,“no remark was made to me.”
He also reportedly invoked an audit said to have been carried out in 2025 for the years 2019–2020, covering his personal property, his Promitheas team, his business, safe deposit boxes, and bank accounts in Greece and abroad.
According to the defendant, “nothing objectionable was found.”
In other words: the tax office saw nothing, the investigator saw enough, and the public saw a federation president in handcuffs. Somewhere, an accountant is updating his CV.
Mavraganis, the businessman and close associate of Liolios, also reportedly denied the charge in his brief testimony.
On Monday, the procedure continues with the testimony of the other three of the six brought before justice after arrest warrants: an active referee and two former referees facing bribery charges.
Because why should a scandal have only one act?
Meanwhile, the political system has discovered its favourite new phrase: “institutional responsibility.”
The Ministry of Sports has reportedly moved to freeze funding to the EOK pending checks, while hundreds of clubs wait to see whether the money that keeps Greek basketball alive will arrive.
The former president sits in pretrial detention, the federation is in crisis, and the only people who seem truly prepared for the next round are the lawyers.
The irony is almost too much. Liolios was the man who promised to clean up Greek basketball, to break the old system, to protect the children from injustice.
Now he is the man accused of allegedly fixing 49 games, including youth and school matches, and of being part of exactly the kind of system he said he would destroy.
If this were a movie, critics would call it unrealistic. In Greece, it is just another Monday.
So what else will we learn? That the algorithm had a hand?
That the tax audits were conducted by the same referees?
That the next “conspiracy” will be announced from a cell, with a freddo and a request for a retrial?
Stay tuned. In Greek basketball, the final whistle never really blows.
